Teens : JET Programs

Ambassadors for Tolerance

In this renowned program, a select group of teens with proven leadership skills represent the Washington Jewish community in our Partnership 2000 sister community Beit Shemesh/Adulam, Israel. A parallel group of Israeli teens represent Israel in our community.

Ambassadors study and participate in seminars and discussions on tolerance and pluralism, race relations, Arab/Israeli dialogue and sensitivities among streams of Judaism. Each year our Ambassadors visit Israel in the late fall and the Israeli Ambassadors visit our Jewish community in the spring. The groups work together in both communities to forge friendships, discuss issues and learn about each other. Past Washington Ambassadors in this unique program have been featured nationally in videos and in the media, have met with State Representatives on Capitol Hill, and have met President Clinton at the White House

Community Teen Recognition Event

Each year, JET asks JCCs, synagogues and Jewish youth groups in the Washington area to nominate two teens who have exemplified the values of leadership, tzedakah and Tikkun Olam. These teens are recognized by the community at a special ceremony in the Spring.

Israel Quest®, a division of JET and an initiative of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, is designed to continue engaging teens in Jewish life past their b'nai mitzvah. Israel Quest builds Jewish teen identity through partnership with area synagogues, youth groups and community organizations. Among other goals, this program promotes the Israel experience trip to teens through their participation in on of 45 approved educational trips. Israel Quest members can receive a subsidy of up to $1,000 from the United Jewish Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation toward their trip. More than 500 teens register for Israel Quest each year. Federation's United Jewish Endowment Fund is a generous supporter of this program.

Jewish Youth Philanthropy Fund

The Jewish Youth Philanthropy Fund brings together 20 area students in the eighth and ninth grades for a real Foundation-like experience.   With a match of $500 per student from the United Jewish Endowment Fund and a private donor, participants choose to contribute $500 of their own funds - possibly from their b'nai mitzvah gifts - for a total of at least $20,000 in the fund.   Participants meet with around six communal organizations, consider grant requests from these organizations, and make philanthropic grants as a group based on their own opinions.

Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Initiative

In order to create effective teen leaders, enhance current summer leadership training opportunities and to elevate the status of teen leadership, JET provides pre-summer training sessions for those teens who will be CITs at area day and resident camps. The first year of the initiative will work with the DC Jewish Community Center (JCC), JCC of Greater Washington, JCC of Northern Virginia and Capital Camps.
